Chapter 3 / 8

The Bar, the Bankrupt, and the Gypsies

The company collects money for joint expenses. No one remembers who owes whom, and the only bankrupt suddenly becomes the chief financial expert. The chapter satirizes the household economy and collective decision-making.

After the Great Party of Count Deberts, hard times came in Dovbaivka.

Everyone had money.

And this, as you know, is the most dangerous state for a dumbass.

***

- Now we will clean up and sit at home, - someone said.

- That's right.

- The book must be published.

- At least on the shelf.

- This will be a victory.

At this point, everyone thought.

Because none of those present had yet finished reading any of the books he was buying.

***

A local philosopher was sitting in the corner.

His name was Cleanup Day.

No one knew why.

Maybe because he had been going to clean up for ten years.

- Do you already want to kick us out? - someone asked.

- Not that I want to, - answered Cleanup Day.

- But you are not going.

This thought seemed so profound to everyone that it was written down in the Dovbaivka collection of folk wisdom.

***

At that moment Lady from the Square walked in.

Chief financial expert of the district.

- At the moment it costs nine hundred and fifty.

- And what?

- But she made a discount.

- How much?

- Eight hundred.

A collective exhalation was heard in the hall.

- Wow...

- Wow...

- You have to take it.

No one knew exactly what.

But it was definitely necessary to take it.

***

- Let's throw a bar now.

- A bar?

- In cash.

- And then we will settle.

- Between themselves.

- As always.

At this point, the accountant lost consciousness.

***

The first participant threw a ten.

The second threw a twenty.

A third said:

- I am bankrupt.

And did not throw anything.

He was immediately elected Minister of Finance.

***

- Who takes the first step?

- I took the first one.

- I placed a bet.

- The bet did not run.

- I need to drink.

- I passed.

The elders nodded their heads.

Everyone understood that there was no logic here.

But traditions must be respected.

***

An hour later, the money was on the table.

No one remembered who put how much.

And the main thing is why.

But the atmosphere was great.

***

The wind picked up outside.

- Let's give ten euros each.

- Why?

- So that it doesn't wear out.

It was one of the few economic theories that everyone accepted without controversy.

***

And just then old Shepherd said quietly:

- Be careful.

- What?

- Gypsies stand on the district.

Everyone was on guard.

- Are they catching?

- They catch

- Who?

Shepherd thought.

- But who will they find?

After that, Dovbaivka was declared on high alert.

And still, no one counted the money.
